Joana Loureiro, Ph.D.
Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Loureiro completed her thesis work in the laboratory of Dr. Hidde L. Ploegh, first at the Department of Pathology, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, and then at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, in Cambridge, MA, as a Gulbenkian Ph.D. Program fellow. She received her Ph.D. in 2007. During her thesis work, she studied the mechanisms by which human cytomegalovirus proteins evade the immune response and in doing so identified a novel role for signal peptide peptidase in dislocation of proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum. Dr. Loureiro joined the Center for the Study of Hepatitis C in February 2008 and is investigating the roles of host factors in the HCV life cycle. Dr. Loureiro is the recipient of a Women & Science Postdoctoral fellowship.
