Dr. Li received her Ph.D. in Microbiology in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Emerman at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. During her doctoral studies she investigated the functional impact of human polymorphisms on the activity of APOBEC3H, a host deaminase that restricts diverse retroviruses. She found that the most active APOBEC3H allele currently present in humans is more cytoplasmic than the less active alleles and more sensitive to HIV-1 Vif, the viral antagonist of APOBEC3. Since joining the Center for the Study of Hepatitis C in August 2011, her research has focused on host innate immune factors that regulate alphavirus replication.
